A great experience–the big draw chalk festival in Pleasanton

This weekend The Big Draw Chalk Festival took place in Pleasanton, California. I was thrilled to attend this event because of all the members of the community that wanted to show their passion for art. Even though it was an extremely warm day on Saturday, I enjoyed all the drawings that artists from all levels were doing, I was very impressed about how enthusiastic these artists were considering the hot weather. After talking to some of the artists I found out that every drawing had a story behind which made it even more significant, even one of the drawing’s meaning was related to the history of the City of Pleasanton which I thought it was very thoughtful of the artist.

My favorite part of the event were the performing arts which consisted of musicians and Chinese students from all ages demonstrating their skills on stage. I was happy to see that the Chinese community played an important role in contributing to the city in such a nice multi-cultural event. ImageImage
This festival is so unforgettable because I was highly participated in marketing this festival through social media platform.  We created a video and promoted this special event to our friends, and friends of our friends in our network. This was one of the greatest experiences in the MBA program. We used the knowledge we learned into the MBA program to apply into the real business world.
Also, I did have a great time with my cohort classmates. We enjoyed talking and walking with each other in the sun. Thanks to Yi Jiang, who organized and hosted the lunch for all of us on that day.
To sum up, it was really a great experience in there we see how strong is the impact of the social media. I felt extremely excited because our work plays a vital role in the success of the whole event.

7. Be skilled at Office

Although it is not a big deal, but what I noticed according to my experience is students always lack the sufficient office skills which are needed in a MBA program.  Those usually include the Excel skills, Word skills and Powerpoint skills.

8. Create the Network

Value every person which you meet in the MBA program and try to communicate more with other MBA program students through different activities such as c competition.   Study told us that majority of the successful people do have a strong network. Do not hesitate to build up yours. Now it  is the time.

9. Focus on Your Drawback

Before you start this MBA program, one thing you need to be aware is that MBA is a program which trains you different aspects of business. So forget about your major in college. The right thing for you to do now is to look into a bigger picture and improve what you still are bad at rather than good at.

10. Teamwork

Still think about yourself as a isolated person? Only want to do things by yourself? It might applicable for an engineering student while totally not applicable for a MBA student. Join others and do some work as a team.

11. Internship

Internship is vital all the time.  Take it if it is possible! It will be helpful for you to build up your resume and practice what you have learned in class.

12. Entrepreneurship

MBA is a great opportunity for you to think about becoming an entrepreneur. Grasp it! Do not think you can not become an entrepreneur as it is too challenging. MBA program will help you think creatively and broadly.

13. Reading

Everyday you need face a lot of assignments and cases. Read more and train your reading skills to make sure you can get the key meaning effectively.

14. Be determined

For all the students, we need to be determined once we take the challenge. You can sleep less and work harder to finish what you need to do. I believe this could lead to our success for sure.

15. Be Willing to Accept Culture Shock

The last tip is especially for international students. MBA could be much more challenging for an international student as the unfamiliarity to the culture and language.  Do not be scared or feel shameful if you make mistakes. Be willing to accept the challenge which life gives to you.  Living in a foreign country could be hard, but that does not mean you should close yourself. Try to connect more with people and enjoy your stay.

Above are 15 tips for a MBA student. I wish every new MBA student could have a wonderful study and working experience in the coming one or two years!

The long beach competition (1)

Through this Thursday to Saturday, we had a special experience in ICSBC which held in Anaheim. Before we left for this competition,we knew we would experience an intense time there to make our decisions in company operation.

Our group consists 6 people, which includes our CEO(Andrew Vargas), CFO(Wenwen Jiang), VP in Marketing( Charlene Cervantes), VP in Production (Leigh Purry), VP in Sales ( Denise Thao Yang) and Controller( Gaspar Sanchez). On Thursday, Andrew and me were lucky to get on-site on time, submitted the report. The two people in our team—Denise and Leigh, their plane was delayed by 7 hours.

The competition started from social hours and we met our competitors in person there. The feeling is interesting because we have been competitors for over 2 months through internet while it was the first time we have met each other. Later, we have a warming up meeting and every team introduced themselves. The first decision on site was due in less than two hours and that was our first time to feel pressure as we need to make a decision in such a short time.

Friday & Saturday

These two days are the toughest for us. We need to make 7 decisions and also need present our results on Saturday morning to the judges. The most unforgettable thing is that one email told us that since the system’s error, we need to make the last three decisions again, which means the decisions we made before were no longer valid. We experienced a hard time at that time; we had an even tighter schedule and need redo all the decision and work longer with our un-refresh mind. But finally, we still got everything perfectly done!

I strongly felt the importance of collaboration in a team. Through the process, our team, as a whole, we were working extremely hard and supporting each other. Everybody got few hours of sleep every day.

The awarding banquet is the peak time of the whole competition. We got the best performance in stock market and second place in the performance of the competition.

Last but not the least, Saturday is Denise’s birthday and the whole competition group was celebrating her birthday and singing the birthday song for her during the banquet. I believe that she will never forget this special experience for her.

My experience–Social Media’s Impact on my life

Social Media provides a platform that people can communicate with each other freely about their own ideas or lives. There’s no denying that social media has a huge impact on the whole world as a tornado. Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter boast millions of users who are now actively engaged in diverse hot topics.

As a international student who comes to USA to study in a MBA program, I have the strong feeling that social media is now changing our life. I used some social media to enhance my study and learning experience. For example, when I came to USA one year ago, everything here seemed fresh for me. I could not speak fluent English, I could not find a tasty restaurant, I was not familiar with the culture here…. Social media  helped me get adjust to the life here more easily as I chat and communicate with my cohort classmates not only in the classroom but also outside of the campus. Social media provides me one way of learning the authentic living style of people here.

Social media has enhanced my social capital and improved my civic engagement. In this electronic decade, people are getting closer even they are physically apart from each other. Through social media, we can easily know each other’s life, share the ideas toward the same topic. As social media actually brings convenience for us, it is broaden our social scope.

Some technologies also help us in learning. For example, we can get the online resources if we face difficulty in learning some materials in hand. Both New York times and Economists website are where we can get a update of the current world news in politics and economics.

New Life starts from here! Are you well prepared?
